Tayammum

Tayammum (dry ablution) is a special method Muslims use to purify themselves when water is unavailable. Imagine being on a hike or traveling to where clean water is rare. This simple yet profound act helps Muslims stay connected to their faith, no matter where they are. It is a fast way to do tayammum or dry ablution. You perform a dry ablution when you are not able to do wudu commonly because you don’t have access to water.

How to Perform Tayammum

Just like the guidance for Wudu. Islam has given guidelines about the steps Tayammum can take. To perform Dry Ablution, you can follow a step-by-step procedure to know how to do Dry Ablution:

  1. Strike both hands on the ground. Anything that you feel tacky on your hands should be removed.
  2. Use both hands to wipe your face while following the steps done during wudu.
  3. Then wipe the cartilage of the upper ears.
  4. Strike your hands on the ground a second time.
  5. Wipe your left hand and arm with your right hand.
  6. Wipe the inner side of the left hand with the right hand and the inner side of the right hand with the left hand.

Importance of Tayammum in Islam:

Tayammum plays an important role in Islam. It helps Muslims stay neat, clean, and pure when they do not have access to water. This exercise is based on the Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Tayammum is most important for some reasons:

  • Staying clean and pure: Tayammum (Dry Ablution) helps Muslims maintain their ritual purity, even when water is not available.
  • Making worship easier: Dry Ablution provides an option to wudu and ghusl, making it easier for Muslims to perform their prayers and other religious duties.
  • Showing Allah’s mercy: Tayammum discloses Allah’s kindness and compassion, as He provides a way for Muslims to worship him even in difficult situations.
  • Helping spiritual growth: Dry Ablution motivates Muslims to develop a stronger spiritual connection with Allah, as they learn to adapt to challenging circumstances.

Further Judgments about Tayammum:

Tayammum is also called ( altahara al-turabiyya ). Dry Ablution in Islam aims to purify one’s hands and face with soil to prepare for prayers and other religious duties.

In Surah an Nisa 4:43 Quran says:

“And if you’re ill or on a journey or one of you comes from a place or relieves himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then look for clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [ with it ] Indeed Allah is most merciful and Forgiving.”

One more another place In Sahih Bukhari: 348

“Perform Tayammum with clean earth and that will be enough for you”

How to Perform Wudu Without Water:

When access to water is available, we have the option of Tayammum. Dry Ablution is an Arabic word that means purpose or aim. It is derived from “amma,” which means to repair. In Islamic laws, Tayammum means to wipe a person’s face and hands with soil, purified sand, or dust to purify them for prayer. If you have no access to water, you should go for Tayammum.

Can I do Tayammum If I have Fever?

The sick person may fear harm as a result of using water, or there may not be anyone who can get it for him, and he himself is unable to get it. It is not right to do Tayammum or dry ablution when water is available and one is able to use it. But if the sick person is not able to use the water, and he is scared that he may suffer harm as a result of using it, then it is permissible for him to do Dry Ablution with a fever.

Hadith For Dry Ablution

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Clean earth is a source of purification for you, even if you do not find water for ten years. But if you do find water, cleanse yourself with it, as it is better.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

Quranic Verses on Dry Ablution

 Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:6)
Allah (SWT) says:
“O you who believe! When you stand for prayer, wash your face and hands up to the elbows, wipe over your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles. If you are in a state of ritual impurity, purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey, or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself, or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make it difficult for you but intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you so that you may be grateful.”
